A sturdy pocket sized camera, the Flip Ultra HD is easy to use and low cost. This is perfect for someone looking for a low profile or easy to carry camera.

With weight and size taken into account this camera can film some really great looking videos. The colour display is vibrant, even with only a two inch screen. It has fantastic sound recording and playback, and inbuilt speakers that are very loud and clear. The Ultra HD also has a HDMI port and can suport two AA batteries, unlike all the other Flip cameras.

There are some problems with this camera -

The base of the camera is unevenly shaped. Because the base isn’t entirely flat when placed on a flat surface it may wobble. This is something to be aware of when using the camera. Though it is to be noted that the camera has not yet fallen when I’ve been using it.

Low light situations cause the video quality to degrade. It becomes very grainy. The image stabalization appears to be non-exsistant, so hold the camera very steady to record high quality videos.

The camera display has no information on how much power the rechargable battery has left until just before it runs out. Once all the power has left the battery it takes up to 7 hours to fully recharge.

Also there is no way to fast forward or rewind while you’re watching a video clip on the camera.

I’d hope that lots of these issues will be updated in the next release of the Flip camera. Is it better to wait for the new version, or to try this one? It really depends on what you need. If you want instant recording of what is going on at any moment, this is a great, easy to use, point and shoot camera. However if you are looking for high quality movie recording, then you would be better to go with a different camera.

The Flip UltraHD is fun to use, easy to carry, quick to point and shoot and downloads to send easily.

I bought that darn tripod and now I am going to use it. I don’t care how much it weighs or how dorky I look. And if I forget to use the tripod, at least I will make sure I use the camcorder’s image stabilizer. OK? I promise…. I am going to charge my camcorder’s batteries before a family event. Never again am I going to get stuck in the middle of a kid’s birthday party with no juice. And if the camcorder uses regular batteries, I will make sure I bring new fresh ones. I am going to edit my videos. My computer has video editing software in it that will enable me to cut out the bad parts and quit subjecting my family and friends to outtakes and shots of my feet because I forgot to turn the camcorder off. I am going to edit those parts out. I really am. I promise. Maybe I will even edit in a funny voice over or captions…. I am warning you now. This goes hand in had with editing. I think putting a bunch of short two to three minute videos on YouTube is going to work just fine. I will learn to label my video DVDs, video cards and videotapes correctly. Even those tiny little Digital Video cassettes with no space at all to write what the tape is all about. I am going to come up with a plan or at least my kids will. Because – as with any computer, it is not a matter if a hard drive will fail, it is a matter of when… I am going to leave the camcorder out on the mantle so that the family can use it whenever it is needed, rather than having to dig it out from the closet, find the batteries and hope it all works before that special moment disappears forever. No more zooming. I have learned my lesson. I am not going to zoom in and out and drive everyone crazy. I promise to physically move my camcorder in closer to everyone’s faces for those close-ups. No more silly comments while videotaping. I promise to never tell people to smile or act natural again. And I promise, no more chasing the kids around the house too early in the morning. Yes I think its cute to see them in their pajamas but they may be permanently damaged – especially when I insist on showing the video clips to their potential dates. And no uploading to their FaceBook or MySpace pages.

Finally, I am going to let my girl friend and kids operate the camcorder.

We don’t want the family to be watching the videos ten years from now and saying, “Where’s Daddy? Anybody remember what daddy looked like before he got chubby and all his hair fell out?”

In-car video capture (using your camcorder to capture scenery as you drive along) is an emerging digital photography technique. The in-car video application requires a stable, safe, and reliable mounting solution to capture high-quality footage without becoming a distraction to the driver. Some in-car camcorder mounting solutions can require specialized camcorders and attachment hardware while others let you use your existing camcorder and tripod.

Tripod-based in-car camcorder mounts can enable more flexible camera angles by positioning of the tripod head. For example, you can aim the camcorder and tripod head to capture scenery through the front windshield, out the rear windshield, or through a side window for different perspectives based on where the best scene is and which direction you’re driving in.

Suction-cup based camcorder mounts typically do not enable such adjustment of the camera angle since the camera is near the windshield or movement of the mounting mechanism is not adjustable.

Tripod-based in-car camcorder mounts typically require a tripod with leg braces on the tripod. Leg-braces are common on more inexpensive tripods as they are intended to provide increased stability for the photographer / videographer by locking into place. However, some more expensive tripods may not provide leg-braces as they are intended for use by professional photographers who may work in a variety of locations, requiring maximum adjustability of the tripod legs.

The tripod mounts on a platform that sits in your car seat while the platform itself is held down by a seatbelt. You can see a variety of in-car camcorder mounts online.

Two additional tripod features are useful for in-car video applications.

3-axis Heads To Enable Positional Control of Your Camera Angle

3-axis heads provide control along the three X, Y, and Z axes so that it’s easier to set your camera angle. In cases where you may want to shift the shot from the front windshield view to the side window, the horizon may not be level due to the angle of the carseat and mounting platform. You can simply use a lever to adjust the level of the tripod head (and therefore of the camcorder) without any adjustment to the tripod mount.

Quick-release Camera Plates

These plates make quick removal of your camcorder from the tripod easy by unlatching the plate and camcorder. This enables you to take your camcorder along with you while leaving the tripod mount in place when you want to take some shots outside your car. The quick-release camera plate stays attached to your camcorder; you don’t have to unscrew the ¼-inch mounting screw each time.

You can see a demonstration video of these features on YouTube.
